Library facilities belonging to the City are closed for all walk-ins during the adjusted Covid-19 alert level 4.
Due to the increasing number of covid 19 infections in the country, the City decided to close the doors to all their 48 libraries.
‘’Libraries will be closed until further notice depending on the Covid 19 situation in the country. The City will keep the community posted about any developments regarding the closure or re-opening of the libraries’’ said Karin Muller, Head of Library, and Information Services.
Whilst physical visits to the library are currently not allowed, virtual library service will, however, be available in all libraries:
- Virtual library – This is a digital space in the libraries that keeps and organizes virtual books and other library materials. This initiative will encourage a culture of reading and to provide convenient access to books at any given time.
The virtual library can be accessed to all the City’s libraries and for one to be able to use it one needs to register for it.
How to register for the service:

- Once you received your membership number, log on to Gauteng.overdrive.com to access audio and e-books.
Library books and materials borrowed through the virtual library can be used for 14 days and after that, it is automatically returned.
