During the EMPD Specialised Services festive season operation on Tuesday, 4 January, a motorist was arrested for fraud at a roadblock on the M2 west and Refinery Road intersection.

The driver of a black VW Golf was stopped at the roadblock and during the systematic check on the vehicle it was noticed that a fraudulent license disc was displayed on the windscreen. Further probing revealed that both the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and engine number are not registered on the e-Natis system. In addition, the registration plates were found to belong to another vehicle of similar make and model. The owner of the vehicle whose registration plates were fraudulently used was called and he confirmed to be in possession of his vehicle, which was parked inside his garage.

It was later confirmed that the vehicle is from a neighbouring country and never registered on the e-Natis system.

In a separate incident, one motorist was arrested for being in possession of drugs.

During the operation, 174 motor vehicles and 207 occupants were searched, and more than 410 crime prevention pamphlets distributed to motorists and passengers.

Road users are urged to continue to abide by the rules of the road. To report crime related issues, residents can visit any of the EMPD precinct station or call SAPS crime stop on 08600 10111.
