CAPTION: Members of the Bophelong Fitness Club in Hospital View, Thembisa taken through their paces

Suffering obesity and other ailments that saw her bedridden for over 10 years was the quantum leap for 62-year-old Catherine Mathebe to start the Bophelong Fitness Club in her hood in Hospital View, Thembisa.

After starring death at the face, Mathebe dusted her sick bed off and invited 10 friends for a gym session in her garage on 11 August 2016.

The club has since grown in leaps and bounds and today has over 200 members who go through their paces in the afternoon.

With the assistance of various instructors, the fitness club uses a combination of aerobics and kata box to beat obesity and lifestyle illnesses such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

“It all started in my garage, and we now use my yard and extend to the main street where we train every morning. Aerobics is what most people love,” she said.

Mathebe said membership to the club was open to anyone from Thembisa, stating that membership was free of charge.

“The aim of this club is to promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle for men and women, young and old through fitness initiatives and training. The Fitness Club operates from Monday to Thursday and there are two sessions, from 16h00 to 17h00 and 17h30 to 18h30,” she said.
