The MMC for Health and Social services Cllr Nomadlozi Nkosi calls on residents of the city to act and not turn a blind eye on child abuse.
MMC Nkosi urged citizens of the City to ensure that children do not suffer any form of abuse.
“It is in our hands to stop the cycle of neglect, abuse, violence and exploitation of children. All our Customer Care Centres (CCC) have social worker’s offices where a dedicated team of professionals are there to help those suffering any form of abuse.
Protecting children from abuse is not only a basic value but the responsibility of all citizens as clearly set out in Article 28 of the South African Constitution,” said Cllr Nkosi.
Her plea resonates with the ‘National Child Protection Week’ commemorated in the country annually from 30 May to 6 June 2021 to raise awareness of the rights of children.
Residents are urged to teach children about their rights and know which numbers to call when they are abused.
Below are some of the avenues victims of abuse can call:
- Childline South Africa: 0800 055 555
- Child Welfare South Africa: 0861 4 CHILD (24453) / 011 452-4110 / e-mail:
The Department of Social Development has a pilot a 24-hour call centre dedicated to provide support and counselling to victims of gender-based violence:
- The toll-free number to call is 0800 428 428 (0800 GBV GBV) to speak to a social worker for assistance and counselling.
